Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background
It is well known to us all that the Chinese people hold many activities to celebrate the most magnificent and exciting Spring Festival, for instance, having a thorough cleanup, decorating streets and houses with lanterns and festoons, setting off fireworks and firecrackers, paying New Year calls, etc.. These activities are invested with a nation’s civilization and carry forward its traditional cultural customs. Among such a highly diversified activities, pasting Spring Festival couplets is one of the most popular ones, which is maintained today and will continue. Jiang (2014) says that we often need some things with a hint of sense of rites and ceremonies. Taking Spring Festival couplets, which is posted on household doors as an example, the Spring Festival couplet has been a symbol or an essential part of our culture. The Spring Festival couplet is a strong identity of Chinese cultural element. “The Study of Chinese Nian: Customs Spring Festival Couplet ” says that this tradition has a long history and rich social and cultural connotations and in its way of evolution, typical Chinese ethical feelings, life consciousness and cultural pursuit are condensed (Lü, 2010). Chinese language is the unique carrier of Spring Festival couplets. As a result of some special features in Chinese language and Chinese character, the sound, shape and melody in Spring Festival couplets can be expressed perfectly (Xu, 2011). Apart from the above mentioned, the content of Spring Festival couplets is another important aspect. The rich content of Spring Festival couplets includes a wealth of meaning. The Spring Festival couplet has been found as a language phenomenon for a long time. Some scholars have made some achievements. However, we still have a long way to go, and more attention should be paid to studies on Spring Festival couplets, which is one of the most important elements of Chinese traditional culture. All in all, many rich and good linguistic expressions embedded in Spring Festival couplets have attracted many academics. As for the present achievements, the researchers usually study Spring Festival couplets from viewpoint of Chinese linguistic literature, sociology and folklore. Few researchers have ever made efforts to study Spring Festival couplets from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. Therefore, the author chooses Spring Festival couplets as the research object.

1.2 Purpose and significance Conceptual Blending
Theory is also called Conceptual Integration Theory. It is a new theory that can help us to further understand cognitive processes of people’s mind work and deepen our understanding of meaning construction in language. Even some very simple structures in natural language rely on Conceptual Blending Theory (Su & Zhang, 2001). Spring Festival couplets, as one important element of Chinese traditional culture as well as a Chinese symbol, are imbued with ideas and thoughts of human creativity. This thesis applies four-space network models of Conceptual Blending Theory to analyze Spring Festival couplets, in order that it can explore the on-line meaning construction of Chinese Spring Festival couplets and disclose the dynamic mental process of Spring Festival couplets when people appreciate them. In this thesis, the author tentatively utilizes Conceptual Blending Theory to discuss the cognitive mechanism of meaning construction of Chinese Spring Festival couplets. On the whole, two ways of significance should be mentioned. From a theoretical point of view, few studies on Spring Festival couplets have been conducted from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. Therefore, applying Conceptual Blending Theory to the analysis of Spring Festival couplets provides the readers a different view, which demonstrates certain exploration innovation. What’s more, it can prove the great explanatory power of this blending theory. From a practical point of view, although the process of modernization speeds up, the revitalization of traditional culture of China will be an irresistible force. As one element of Chinese traditional culture, Spring Festival couplets will attract more and more attention from researchers and scholars. This thesis will help readers have a better understanding of Spring Festival couplets and encourage enthusiasts to create more and better Spring Festival couplets.

Chapter Two Literature Review
In this chapter, the author will give a brief introduction of Spring Festival couplets, including its definition, development history, and features. Apart from these, its previous studies and studies of the applied theory on other phenomena will also be presented.
2.1 Studies of Spring Festival couplets
As a language phenomenon, Spring Festival couplets are filled with creative and rich linguistic expressions, which attract many researchers to study. In the following, the author will introduce Spring Festival couplets briefly in order that it can make the scope of this study clearer. Gu Pingdan, Chang Jiang and Zeng Baoquan (1991) point out that Spring Festival couplets belong to antithetical couplets. It is pasted on Lunar New Year’s Eve to pray good luck and happiness. It is derived from Tao Fu and Men Shen. Tao Fu is such a thing that peach wood charms against evil, hung on the gate on the Lunar New Year's Eve in ancient times, while Men Shen means door god. At the beginning of spring, the first thing is to post goalkeeper and couplet. That is what modern men call pasting up Spring Festival couplets. The Spring Festival couplet includes two different senses. One is a kind of cultural phenomenon from the significance of folklore. The other is a literary genre from the stylistics point of view (Bai, 2011). It is a definition from the perspective of two different disciplines. According to Practical Dictionary of Modern Chinese edited by Yu Xin and Yu Weiqun (2013), Spring Festival couplets, also named Chunlian in Chinese, is a kind of antithetical couplets posted on the door when we celebrate Chinese New Year. Couplets displayed as one part of Chinese Spring Festival, is also called Chunlian. These are usually purchased at a market a few days before and glued to the doorframe. This definition tells us the time and the place it should be posted.Qin (2015) says that a couplet is composed of two lines of poetry that come next to each other, especially two lines that rhyme with each other and are of the same length. In addition, the lines should be posted vertically, with the first one on the right and the second one on the left. Some couplets also have a top scroll. A complete Spring Festival couplet is composed of the above three parts.
